Custom Foot Orthotics

Twenty five percent of all bones in the human body are found in the feet, and those feet often strike the ground 10,000 to 15,000 times a day!   Imbalances in the way in which feet repeatedly strike the ground  is often the result of unique inherited foot types, characterized by various combinations of rearfoot and forefoot deviations that often negatively affect body mechanics from the ground up and may ultimately affect normal functioning not merely of the foot and ankle, but the entire musculoskeletal system, including knees, hips, pelvis, lower back and even the upper spine as well.    Custom accomodative (ie. accomodating the foot you've inherited) orthotics help to realign the bones within the foot and ankle, and by controlling suboptimal foot mechanics, also relieve mechanical stress and painful symptoms  to those other parts of the body such as the back, neck, shoulders, pelvis or  hips and knees.  Dr Dolan's interest in foot orthotics began in 1981 when a chronic knee issue quickly resolved after using them, triggering an interest in including this service as part of a comprehensive mechanical approach for his own patients, and led to training with the fabrication lab he has been using since.

Custom foot orthotics may  be recommended  by Dr Dolan following a brief screening examination, which is then followed by a comprehensive 1 hour foot evaluation to to record relevant measurements, and finally off weightbearing, neutral midstance  plaster casting.  Casts and measurements are then delivered to the lab which usually completes the finished appliances within several weeks and they can then be dispensed to the patient who is instructed to break them in gradually over the next seven days.   Unlike other orthotics, there is no need to throw these away after considerable use, as they can be refurbished from time to time and ultimately be worn for eight to ten years or more!   This is a great investment into your overall health and well being from a biomechanical standpoint.
