Atlas Orthogonal

Introducing the Atlas Orthogonal Chiropractic Technique

A gentle, effective approach to renewed health and relief of discomfort without manipulation.

You are probably asking yourself, Atlas Orthogonal what?

The Atlas is the top bone of the spine and supports the head.  It is the vertebrae that the head sits on. The term Orthogonal means at right angles, or square. According to the laws of physics, the atlas should optimally be sitting level, or square, on the cervical spine (neck), and the head should be square on the atlas. It basically asks the question: Is your head on straight?

Atlas Subluxated

If the atlas is misaligned (subluxated) it causes the head to tilt. The body instinctively tries to straighten the head up while keeping the head over the feet (center of gravity). This causes STRESS throughout the rest of the spine, the shoulders, the pelvis, the hips, the knees, and the ankles.

Subluxations (misalignments) are often deceiving. Even though symptomatic pain may appear in the lower back, legs, shoulders, arms or other parts of the body, their cause is very often located in the cervical spine (neck).

How does this unique method differ from General Chiropractic treatment? One of the most obvious differences is the gentle way in which the doctor works. No strenuous manipulation is required. The Atlas Orthogonal (A.O.) Technique utilizes an adjusting instrument developed by Dr. Roy W. Sweat with the aid of engineers at Georgia Tech University. The precision of the A.O. instrument allows for an adjustment that requires such a light force that patients, who may expect more forceful manipulations as part of their treatment, find it hard to believe anything effective has been accomplished. Their doubts and fears quickly vanish when their pain and discomfort disappear.

Dr. Roy W. Sweat

Dr. Roy Sweat, the developer of the Atlas Orthogonal Program, and considered by many to be one of the foremost authorities in the world on the cervical spine, devised a method using a percussion wave to re-position the atlas vertebra. The history of treating the atlas goes back to the early 1900s when Dr. B.J. Palmer, the developer of chiropractic, spent many years of clinical research in discovering that it was the atlas that controlled the position of the head and the resulting position of the rest of the spine. Dr. Palmer taught to correct the atlas position using the hands with @ 40 pounds of force. Dr. Sweat and Dr. John F. Grostic were taught by Dr. Palmer. In his extensive clinical research, Dr. Grostic found that much less force was actually necessary to correct the atlas into position. Dr. Sweat in his further research discovered that even less force was actually needed. Dr. Sweat invented and engineered a highly advanced instrument that without pain or pressure is able to accurately re-position the atlas vertebra.

Over the years Dr. Sweat has had much of his research documented and published in scientific journals. The following article is a culmination of over fifty years of clinical research and dedication to improving the health and lives of multitudes:
